A neurosurgeon is a physician who is specialised in the surgical aspect of neuroscience. They are concerned primarily with the diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of neurological disorders of the brain, spinal cord, extra-cranial cerebrovascular system and peripheral nerves.
The education and training required to become a neurosurgeon varies from country to country, but generally it requires four-six years undergraduate studying, a further 3-4 years of medical school, and varying years of residency. From there, a neurosurgeon may decide to pursue a 'fellowship', focusing in sub-specialities, such as trauma/neurocritical care, stereotactic surgery, radiosurgery peripheral nerve and spine injuries, surgical neuro-oncology, neurovascular surgery and so forth.
Pediatric neurosurgery is another 'fellowship' of neurosurgery, concerning the diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of childhood neurological conditions and abnormalities. Due to the difference between a fully developed adult nervous system, and that of a developing child's, pediatric neurosurgery is a field of medicine in it's own right.
Conditions that are treated by the best neurosurgeons in India include tumors of the brain (such as meningioma, epidermoid, dermoid, subependymal giant cell astrocytoma, hemangioblastoma, colloid cyst and craniopharyngioma), neurovascular disorders (aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations, strokes and transient ischemic attack).
Neurogenetic diseases (such as neurofibromatosis types I and II,Von Hippel-Lindau disease and tuberous sclerosis), functional neurologic disorders (Parkinson's disease, thalamotomy, OCD, epilepsy, etc.), and Spine and peripheral nerve disorders (neck/back pain, nerve compression syndromes, carpal tunnel syndrome, herniated intervertebral and spinal cord compression) are all areas that the best neurosurgeons in India handle regularly.
Pediatric neurosurgeons specialize in developmental disorders such as tethered spinal cord, spina bifida, syringomyelia, hydrocephalus, lipoma, dermal sinus, split cord malformation, Kippel-Fiel syndrome and CSF shunts to name but a few.
