The correct regulation of regular sleeping patterns plays a huge role in the overall physical and psychological health of a person. A somnologist is a specialist physician who has undergone years of medical training necessary to research, diagnose and treat sleep disorders, and sleep-related breathing disorders. Known to some as a 'hypnologist', the best somnologists in India have a vast array of diagnostic tools and procedures at their disposal in order to accurately assess the nature and causal source of sleep disorders/irregularities and sleep-related breathing disorders that their patients have issues with. Some of these diagnostic procedures are subjective in nature, a good example of which is the sleep diary that the best somnologists in India will ask their patients to keep. Another vital part of the diagnostic process is the sleep questionnaire(s) that patients will be asked to fill out, both in the session, or to be taken home and returned at a later date. There are more active diagnostic procedures, some performed over night or whilst the patient is asleep at the hospital or sleep clinic. These procedures, such as polysomnography and actigraphy, provide, unparalleled levels of direct observation and data collection. These more active diagnostic procedures are used rarely, only to treat the most significant disorders. Some of the most common problems dealt with by the best somnologists in India include; insomnias, hypersomnias (narcolepsy, etc), sleep-related breathing disorders, circadian rhythm sleep-wake disorders, parasomnias, sleep movement disorders, night-terrors.
