For some fears can be just another emotion and for the other lot it can be so large that it disrupts their life to function normally. If it is minor we can still live with it by simply avoiding such situations where we need to face our fears. But for others it may not be so simple. Be it rational or irrational fears both can be a serious cause of concern for you to enjoy your daily life. However, rational fears are known to be comparatively healthy as they are based on solid realities or maybe a personal experience. But it can be trouble when fears are irrational although it can also be based on personal experience but it lacks reality and can be associated with a bad experience. Before its too late, it is of extreme importance to identify them and find ways to control it.
- Identify your fears and every possibility for the reason triggering it:
Jatin is a social scientist, but he has a fear of enclosed spaces, he feels claustrophobic. This fear is totally rational as we cannot imagine a life in enclosed spaces but the problem he faces is that even at work, he has these fears and this hinders his ability to work comfortably in his workstation. Since this fear has started to have a negative effect, this is when it becomes a problem. Jatin fears death from being trapped in such enclosed places.
- Come face to face with the challenges of avoiding or facing the fear:
It is not possible for Jatin to avoid enclosed spaces throughout his life and he knows it very well. Sometimes work requires him to come face to face with his fear and avoiding it becomes an impossible task. He started observing things around him how the people around him live; cars, elevators filled with people and these are all enclosed spaces. He tried to avoid a few times but doing so everyday can be a daunting and impossible. He knew his problem as he confirmed, “I started accepting my fear though I am still in the process but I could think of no other way, life needs to function normally else both my personal and professional life suffers”. This is where Cognitive therapy worked for him along with his own efforts providing ways to combat his fears.
The word fear may not look like a big deal but ask someone like Jatin how it has turned out to be embarrassing and sometimes life changing. He accepted it to be a part of him and this was his first achievement towards facing his fear of enclosed spaces. “It is very important to start proactively thinking about these behaviors and how you want to change them”, says Jatin’s counsellor – Kajol Chakravarty. Such fears for instance enclosed spaces are brought on by the subconscious mind. The good news is that our brain functions in such a way that if you make mistakes and it can be changed accordingly.
