A hypochondriac is always in a tormenting catch 22 situation, as they don’t want to believe that they are ill nor do they want to be dismissed as they are just imagining things.
Thanks to the internet, some people tend to believe whatever they read on the internet. If this was not enough, they tend to self-diagnose their condition on the basis of what ‘Dr. Internet’ suggests and even end up buying the wrong medicines. The irony of hypochondria is that the victims often know that they are a hypochondriac, because they somehow manage to convince themselves to believe that they are ill. To be in two minds eventually may turn out to be the heart of many obsessions.
The worst advice you can give to such a person is by trying to reassure them that everything will be alright, it never works. They just cannot be okay and to think of it, trying deliberately not to think about something is still somehow focusing on it. The only way through this is distraction but this also should happen naturally.
Try and follow these tips to calm yourself:
- Do not try to self-diagnose – This is in particular for people who believe whatever they read on the internet or hear from peers. Go to a real doctor instead of trying to look for symptoms and misdiagnose yourself. This may get worse if you know what symptoms to look for and you will definitely find them. For example: imagine looking on the internet the causes for your headache and to your horror one of the possible outcome turns out to be brain tumor. In cases like this sometimes it is right to state that ignorance can really turn out to be bliss.
- You need to relax – Just like water has no shape of its own, it needs something to give it a shape. Similarly your emotions are the driving force behind your thoughts. Find ways to relax and soothe your mind. The lesser your imagination, the lesser the chances of conjuring up stuff to give shape to your anxieties. Find ways to distract yourself by doing things you like.
- Trust your body – Unfortunately many hypochondriacs are less likely to look after their bodies. They tend to live an unhealthy lifestyle with very little exercise. First, you need to remember that your body should be treated like a temple and its sole purpose is to keep you safe and protected. Have some faith and take care of your body religiously.
- Your body needs a break too – Hypochondriacs are always hyper aware of every ache, a minor muscle stiffness or even dizziness which is felt by almost a lot of people. But these are means of self-torment as well, you need to know that your body is always giving messages to your brain and vice versa. Most of these messages are harmless or rather signs and symptoms of being alive. You become a hypochondriac when you assume any of these signs to be nothing but dangerous for you. Just give yourself a break, worry less and enjoy more.
